Simulation Educator Training (SET) course

This is a course for health care professionals who are (or plan to be) engaged in simulation-based education. It includes a spectrum of content designed to advance the skills of both novice and intermediate simulation educators.

Research has shown that simulation is an effective learning tool, and more educators in the health professions are incorporating simulation in their curricula. This course provides instruction to health educators who would like to integrate technology into their programs but who are unsure of how to get started.

As part of our commitment to continuous quality management, we require all participants to submit confidential evaluation forms upon completion of the course. This evaluation helps measure the course’s educational impact on educators and learners.

What you’ll learn

The principal aim of this course is to equip health educators to implement a variety of simulation-based learning opportunities for their students. The course focuses on the competencies required to

  • develop a simulation curriculum and integrate it with other learning activities,
  • design and develop simulation cases,
  • facilitate simulations,
  • provide effective feedback and debriefing, and
  • evaluate simulations.

The SET course is an accredited self-assessment program (Section 3) as defined by the Maintenance of Certification Program of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and approved by University of Ottawa’s Office of Continuing Medical Education on March 20, 2013. The program expires in March 2017. Remember to visit MAINPORT to record your learning and outcomes. For the SET pre-course component, you may claim a maximum of five hours. For the SET simulation (face-to-face) component, you may claim a maximum of 21 hours. All credits are automatically calculated.
